It takes about a week to dry grass out to make hay.
CROPS
The crops we grow on our farm are
wheat, barley, oats, triticale, asparagus and sweet
corn. Plus grass for hay and for silage to feed our
cattle
in winter.
Inevitably with the transition to organic farming our
yields have dropped. We expect somewhere between 1.5
and 2 tons per acre, this is compared to a conventional
farmer who would expect around 3.5 to 4 tons per acre.
To this end, we are developing new crops.
We are the first organic farmers
in the country to grow Marris Otter winter barley
for malting - to supply the microbrewer who brews
Burwash Manor's own Barton Bitter.
